A Case Study in Automation: Penna Flame & CapSen Robotics

This month, we're sharing a story from the front lines of manufacturing: our work with Penna Flame, a family-owned company facing a common challenge. They needed to automate a demanding manual process that was both difficult and hazardous, and a significant drain on labor. This is the kind of real-world problem CapSen PiC was built to solve.

The Penna Flame Problem

For decades, Penna Flame’s employees manually handled heavy, oil-coated metal parts—each weighing about 37 pounds—as part of their packaging process. This wasn't just a physically demanding job; it was a safety risk and a major source of labor turnover. With a fixed pattern of 72 parts per bin, the process was ripe for automation, but only with a solution that could handle the messy, unstructured reality of a factory floor.

The CapSen Solution

We deployed our CapSen PiC software to give Penna Flame's existing robotic arm a new level of intelligence. CapSen PiC uses advanced 3D vision and motion planning to:

  • Precisely Pick Every Part: The system accurately identifies and picks all 72 parts from the bin, regardless of oil or slight shifts in position. This ensures consistency and reliability that a manual process can't match.
  • Enhance Safety & Efficiency: The automated system takes on the physically taxing work, removing employees from a hazardous task and freeing them up for more valuable roles.
  • Deliver Rapid, Real Results: The automation provides a steady, reliable cycle time, processing an entire pallet in as little as 1.5 hours. This delivers a higher, more consistent overall throughput.

This project is a perfect example of what we call "Rapid, Real, Repeatable" automation, a key trend we highlighted in our July newsletter. It shows how our advanced perception technology can transform even the most challenging, unstructured environments.

From the Factory Floor

Michael Orr, Penna Flame's VP of Operations, shared his perspective: "The UI is super easy to use and can be learned quickly." He highlighted how the system’s intuitive interface simplifies complex automation, making it accessible for their team.

These trends aren't just observations; they're the driving force behind CapSen's vision. We're building a future where smart flexibility is powered by advanced perception, ensuring safety and efficiency. Our focus is on delivering rapid, real, repeatable results and conquering unstructured environments with our cutting-edge technology.

We're shaping the future of robotics, making it more adaptable, collaborative, and impactful.
